“They say it’s your birthday/Well it’s my birthday too.” It actually isn’t my birthday but you had to see this one coming. I have already done anniversaires, so on to the celebration of your birth. Two things: You must play the above song by The Beatles, and you must hire The Replicas Music to provide the live music. A birthday party with live music will be,to borrow from my favorite 90s slang, “Off the Hook.” What is the hook exactly? Is it like being hoisted by your own petard? For those of you scratching your head (don’t blame yourself, education just isn’t what it used to be) think what happens to the coyote in every episode of The Road Runner. But I digress…Having live music at your birthday party will morph the event into a legitimate party. Maybe someone will pull a Keith Moon and throw drums (I mean drum sticks that’s less expensive) in the pool. Also if it is a big number birthday you have to go big or go, well you know. Live music can make even the most resistant birthday boy or girl excited about the day they were evicted from their first low rent studio apartment.
If it were my birthday (clears throat…taps mic for attention) I would be jazzed about having a live band play all my favorite songs. Maybe you are a sensitive, artsy girl that loves the 70s for the singer-song writer vibe. Well have we an ensemble for you! Check it out here. P.S. it is worth it to listen all the way through (#spoileralert Bruce Willis is a…sorry wrong spoiler: there is an acoustic Royals cover.) Or maybe you are just a country boy at heart. Well The Replicas Music have you covered there too! Look here. And I didn’t forget you over there with the ironic t-shirt and love of Son Volt (you though I was going to say Wilco!) We even have an alt-country type ensemble. Check it out and you will not be able to say it sounds better on vinyl. Live music at a birthday party keeps the mood up and makes your birthday party unforgettable.
The following are just a few songs you have to make sure your Replicas Music ensemble plays:
1979- The Smashing Pumpkins
If you don’t have this song played at your birthday party I don’t want to be a part of it. 1979 is equal parts nostalgia and just great music. Oh and Spin Magazine agrees with me. In its article listing the best songs of 1996 (keep up it’s getting tricky) 1979 is number one. Listen to the song again and remember what it was like to be a teen in a forgotten time.
Forever Young- Bob Dylan
Every live music event has to have a Bob Dylan cover. Just name it, and he has a song that will fit your party. This is a great song to play for someone that has great taste in music and may not be happy about the earth starting its next trip around the sun. It also is a great way to wish your friend their best on their birthday, “May your heart always be joyful/ May your song always be sung.”
In da Club- 50 Cent
First let me say it has been life’s work to use the word “da” in a sentence. Should I stop writing now? I mean once you hit your goals, what’s left? But again you had to see this one coming. This song is an all time favorite for every member of a family. My grandma even knows and loves this song and she’s been dead for twenty years. The lyrics are witty, because not only are “we gon’ to party like it’s your birthday.” We will also “sip Bacardi like it’s your birthday.” The sweet irony of the song (looking at you Alanis) is that it isn’t actually anyones birthday in the song, and yet the festivities go on like an early Greco-Roman bacchanal.
