We have to remember that platforms like WebEx were developed designed for speaking, not for a rock concert.
My WebEx Story
I did a deep dive into how WebEx would deal with live music. It started with a quick sound check with just me and my guitar and the client on the other end. Sound was cutting in and out. My client’s mic was muted, I was ethernet connected, everything was hooked up properly and to no avail, WebEx was not happy with live music.
I called WebEx support and after 1.5 hours on the phone with someone somewhere in Asia, with a horrible phone connection (how apropos), there was no solution in making live music sound even remotely good enough.
The sound on WebEx is just bad. Even as a speaking platform. They need to step up their game. Fast!
Zooma Zooma ZOOM
So even though Zoom was also designed simply as a speaking platform, we as a band can perform through Zoom outputting pretty good sound quality.
Since April, we have been performing for birthday parties, corporate events, fundraisers, book signings, and virtual concerts. When a client is trying to keep their budget low for their virtual production, Zoom is the only way to go at this time. Zoom has been upgrading its technology since the beginning of the pandemic. We have noticed a significant difference in sound quality from April to now.
3rd Party Virtual Production
In my opinion, if you have the budget, splurge and get yourself a virtual production team on your side. This is truly the best way to go! They will customize a website for your virtual event and deal with all the technological logistics that you really shouldn’t bother with. The virtual world of technology is a massive beast and we should leave it to the experts to help us navigate and deliver a fantastic virtual experience. Why pull your hair out trying to make this work all by yourself? Focus on your genius and let someone like AV Masters work the magic for you. You’ll be glad you did!
SHOUT OUTs
It takes a village and great gear. We have a solid team for every virtual event:
- Audio engineering by Jeff Gross
- Lighting by Lee Dyson
- Broadcasting by Brandon of AV Masters
We are so grateful to have these guys by our side every step of the way.
